Safe Routes to School

Want to encourage your students to be physically active while reducing traffic congestion and air pollution near your school? Participate in Safe Routes to School, a federally funded program to encourage walking and biking to school. Towns and school districts can apply for Safe Routes funding through their state Department of Transportation. [New York State Safe Routes to School Info >]

Safe Routes to School grant applications must have a non-infrastructure component involving encouragement, evaluation, or education. Grant applications that can show partnerships with other organizations are especially competitive. If your town or school district wants to include a cycling component in its Safe Routes to School program, Bike New York can help.

Bike New York can offer flexible bike education programs for your town's Safe Routes to School program, including teacher training in bike safety skills curricula, classroom bike safety games, and fun presentations for large school assemblies.

For more information, contact Bike New York's Bicycle Education Program staff.
