Dutchess County
Special thanks to Dutchess County officials, led by County Executive William R. Steinhaus, for support and assistance.
Harlem Valley Rail Trail Association
A portion of rider entry fees goes to the Harlem Valley Rail Trail Association. The HVRTA advocates for the completion of a 46-mile rail trail along the former Harlem Division of the Penn Central Railroad between Wassaic and Chatham, New York. With more than 700 members and more than 100 volunteers, the association assists with funding and design of trail amenities such as kiosks, benches, and interpretive signs. It also publicizes the trail and helps educate the public about safe trail use.
Presently two sections of the trail are open in Dutchess and Columbia Counties: 12 miles between Millerton and Wassaic, and four miles between Copake and Boston Corners. Another eight-mile section between Millerton and Under Mountain Road in Boston Corners is under development with construction anticipated in 2008. Map >
In 2007, the HVRTA completed a fund-raising effort to purchase 14 miles of abandoned railroad bed in Columbia County from the Metz family of Sharon, Connecticut. This is a significant portion of the 23 miles of railroad bed between Chatham and Copake Falls. Progress on this trail took another step forward recently with the approval of a detailed trail design document created by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation.
